Our History

Wakefield Family Medical Centre

Our history

In 1883, Wakefield-born Dr. Hans Stevenson, a McGill-trained physician and community leader, established one of the first permanent practices in the village and introduced innovations such as rural telephone service to improve medical response times.

In 1911, Dr. Harold J.G. Geggie arrived to assist Dr. Stevenson. After the latter's unexpected death, Geggie took over the practice, married Stevenson's daughter, Ella, and bought the family home (now known as “Les Trois Érables” bed and breakfast), which served as their residence and refurbished medical office. He became the cornerstone of local health care for decades, and was known for his tireless dedication, performing deliveries, surgeries and house calls in all seasons. His legacy continued through three of his sons - Hans, David and Stuart - who all followed him into medicine and practiced in and around Wakefield, creating a rare multi-generational medical legacy.

In 1952, Dr. Geggie's vision of a community hospital was achieved with the opening of the Gatineau Memorial Hospital on chemin Riverside. Built entirely through local fundraising, it was the heart of healthcare in the Gatineau valley for decades, offering maternity care, surgery and emergency services close to home.

Building on this tradition, the four Geggie doctors opened Wakefield Family Medical Center on February 15, 1956.

In the 1980s, other physicians, including Drs. Folkerson and Satenstein, joined the practice. Over the years, their ranks have been bolstered by other dedicated physicians who share a deep commitment to caring for the people of the Gatineau Hills. The Wakefield Family Medical Centre has also become an important McGill teaching site, regularly welcoming medical students and residents.

Today, Wakefield Family Medical Centre continues to serve the community near the historic hospital's original location, just across from Geggie Park. While our facilities and practices have evolved with advances in modern medicine, our core values remain unchanged: to provide compassionate, community-focused care for every patient.
